About Us
Dakota Plains First Nation (Dakota Plains Wahpeton Oyate) is a Dakota (Sioux) community with a proud heritage. We are one of several Dakota First Nations in Manitoba and have a strong cultural identity rooted in the Dakota language and way of life. Our reserve, Dakota Plains 6A, is nestled in the central plains of Manitoba, just southwest of Portage la Prairie.

Dakota Plains First Nation is a resilient Wahpeton Dakota community with a proud history of perseverance. We honour our ancestors through language, traditions, and ceremonies, guided by Elders and shared with youth. Community, culture, and connection are at the heart of who we are, shaping a strong and vibrant Nation for future generations.
In recent history, Dakota Plains leadership has actively pursued the recognition of our historic land rights and negotiated our long-denied land claims with the Canadian government, only being recognized as a First Nation community in 1972, a hard-won acknowledgement of rights. However, we continue to be excluded from many benefits that our neighbouring treaty First Nations received over the years.
Dakota Plains continues to seek compensation for the lands and villages
that were unjustly taken from our ancestors. This ongoing effort is about
the recognition of our history, the wrongs endured, and most importantly,
it’s about creating a better foundation for future generations.
